Meals and Accommodation: Elsa Kopje
Day 3
Meru National Park is noted for its fauna and natural beauty. It has many swamps and rivers lined with palms, as well as mountains and woodlands, and it is the setting for Joy Adamson’s book “Born Free”, which was later made into a successful film. The park is home to a large pride of lions, herds of buffalo, and hippos and crocodiles that live in the rivers. At Meru, you will find excellent views of snow-capped Mount Kenya and the park’s beautiful landscape is a camper’s paradise. The roads are suitable for vehicles and there are many rocky outcrops that provide great lookout points for the abundant Kenyan animals.

Game viewing is excellent and includes four of the “Big Five” -elephants, lions, leopards and buffalo – as well as cheetahs, antelope, hippos and crocodiles. The roads are well graded and Meru National Park is quieter than some of the other parks.
Meals and Accommodation: Elsa Kopje
Day 4
Depart from Elsa’s Kopje in the morning to Mathew’s Range. Whilst there, you will stay at Sarara Camp, located within the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, the home of the Samburu people.
The wilderness country here is very much unspoilt with limited network of tracks, to enhance the experience. The emphasis is therefore on walking safaris, which you can discover with excellent local Samburu guides.
Meals and Accommodation: Sarara Camp
Day 5
In the northern frontier of Kenya lies the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an area of 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the Mathews Range. The savannah plains and lush mountain slopes are home to elephant, leopard, reticulated giraffe, wild dog and kudu in ever increasing numbers. This remote and dramatic landscape is also home to the local Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the famed ‘singing wells’ are as much a part of the fabric of this land as the wildlife.

From its hillside view, overlooking the Mathews Range, there is not another camp, another foreigner, for nearly 1m acres. There is only the Samburu, in the distance with their cattle, and the wild animals that come to the camp water hole to drink: elephant, buffalo, warthog, impala, baboon and, at night, hyena, and leopard in search of their favourite food here: the little dik-dik antelope.

In 1993, Ian Craig of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy persuaded the neighbouring Il Ngwesi community to become the first community conservation initiative in the north of Kenya. By 1995 the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, an area of 185,000 acres of pristine wilderness was born and has now grown to 850,000 acres. Today there are twenty six similar community projects encompassing over 3.5 million acres up and running under the umbrella of The Northern Rangelands Trust. The Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, under the umbrella of the Norther Rangeland Trust and in partnership with Sarara camp has become widely recognised as one of the most successful community and wildlife conservation initiatives in Africa.
Day 6
On the edge of an escarpment in the heart of the conservancy sits Sarara. The secluded camp consists of only 6 luxurious double tents spread out along the hillside with open air bathrooms to make the most of the exceptional vistas and fully benefit from the hot climate. The team of resident chefs lovingly create delicious, home-cooked meals which can be enjoyed in the bush or in the comfort of the camp’s surroundings. I can’t imagine a more gracious setting for our three days here. Sarara is the perfect combination of rugged terrain and adventure coupled with elegance and relaxation.

Sarara has six luxury tents, each positioned to maximise the stunning views of the Mathews Range of mountains and the animal watering hole. Preserving the romance of the tented camp, these tents are spacious and high ceilinged, with plenty of cupboard space, electric lighting and 24 hour hot and cold running water. There is an outdoor bathroom offering a superb view of the hills from the shower. But there is also an indoor toilet and sink at the back of the tent for midnight visits. Each tent has its own private terrace with table and chairs and morning coffee and tea are brought to you so that you can wake up gazing out over the mountains.
Day 7
After an early breakfast, head to the airstrip to catch your flight to Masai Mara. Your accommodation for the next 3 days is Richard’s Camp, a traditional tented camp of true African safari style with a few modern surprises, overlooking the vast Mara plains.
Masai Mara is one of African’s greatest wildlife reserves, in the northern section of the Serengeti National Park. Whilst roaming around, you are sure to stumble upon lions, leopards, cheetah and witness the great wildebeest migration.
Meals and Accommodation: Richard's Camp
Day 8

Return in the late afternoon after an exciting day to a hot safari shower and roaring fire and a gourmet dinner.
